Celtic manager Neil Lennon has just revealed what his top transfer priority is ahead of the of the 10-in-a-row season.
Celtic has been active during this summer transfer window and have made some acquisitions while also watching a few familiar faces walk out the door. The most obvious subtractions have been keeper Craig Gordon and fan favourite Jonny Hayes. However, the Hoops were able to add Vasilis Barkas in order to take over goalkeeper duties.
Meanwhile, Celtic has been connected with a plethora of other players, many of which are strikers. Peterborough’s Ivan Toney and West Ham’s Albian Ajeti have been the two biggest names attached to the Hoops in recent weeks. However, Peterborough reportedly rejected a £5 million bid. Meanwhile, a season-long loan deal was all but complete for Anjeti until the player backed out.
All of these connections are interesting but, even more surprising is the type of player Celtic seems to be most seriously interested in, which is a striker. With the Hoops already rostering talent at the position in Odsonne Edouard, Leigh Griffiths, Patryk Klimala and Vakoun Bayo, it makes one wonder why such the heavy pursuit of another?
Some are drawing conclusions that Edouard is on his way out, but manager Neil Lennon assuages those fears in his latest remarks as reported by the Daily Record:
“It’s the most important position on the pitch. We’ve had a few injuries and absentees in that department so if there is a quality one available and we think it’s the right thing to do, we will pursue it.
“We’ll take a view on the squad later on down the line. It’ll be a club decision whether we see it as value for money.
“Fletcher is a good player. I’m not going to confirm or deny that, I don’t want to talk about individuals.
“We’ve been linked with a lot of strikers, midfield players, centre halves. There are one or two areas we want to add to because we have let a few players go.
“We let seven or eight go and we have only added Vasilis Barkas to the squad so it’s important we bring quality in, in the areas we are looking for.”
While it is nice to see Celtic connected with so many talented players it does make one believe that this could be it for Edouard. Adding another talented striker would allow the Hoops board to sell Edouard for what could be the biggest transfer fee in the club’s history. Buckle up, this could become a wild ride.
Put hand in the bank for we don’t 10 a. Row. We will forgive you
