Celtic set for tough battle to sign Scottish wonderkid

Celtic have had a reported interest in a youngster. As he looks around and gets tempting offers elsewhere, the Hoops may need to make a move or miss out.

Hearts player Aaron Hickey was on the Celtic Academy’s books a little while back but earned great reviews playing for Hearts last season.  Not an easy task given the Jam Tarts form and many losses. He’s still young and learning the game, just turned 18, he’s only played 24 games in the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic have apparently been reported as interested in re-signing him,  but with no significant progress apparent. He is a left back and that’s an area the club may feel they need to strengthen.

The BBC report that Hickey has been gaining interest from other clubs across Europe and taking a closer look at a few in particular. Apparently Hearts are looking for around £1.5 million for Hickey and with relegation they’ll be keen to bolster the financial gap. The BBC report that Bologna will meet that price and it’s one of the clubs Hickey has been visiting to see what’s on offer and been impressed by.

Other clubs showing an interest include Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday and perhaps most significantly, Bayern Munich. Celtic will need to keep up the pace and stretch to an offer soon if they have a real interest. The hoops have asked Hearts to be kept informed of developments

Any fee could be interesting to negotiate though. Hickey joined Celtic’s academy from Hearts. When he returned to Hearts in 2018 it’s reported that as part of the transfer Celtic would get 30% of a future transfer fee. So they could get a big discount if he moved back to the Hoops, or a decent sum of money if he does move on somewhere else.
